If you are located in Salt Lake City, Murray, or Holladay, Utah and have been considering breast augmentation, contact Dr. Petersen at NuVista Plastic Surgery. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. J. Dayne Petersen is well-known for providing successful and safe transaxillary breast enlargement procedures with minimal recovery time.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast enlargement or breast augmentation at NuVista Plastic Surgery is a common choice for women who are unhappy with their breast size and shape. This procedure enhances the contour of the breasts and creates more volume. Breast enlargement surgery can also be a solution for restoring lost volume and shape after pregnancy, balancing different breast sizes and reconstruction following another breast surgery.

We do breast enlargement surgery on an outpatient basis in our Salt Lake City Office, which is certified by The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. It is usually performed under general anesthesia and involves a breast implant (prosthesis) being placed under the muscle and breast tissue. An incision is then made under the breast (inframammary incision), around the nipple (periareolar incision) or under the arm through the armpit (transaxillary incision).

Dr. Petersen’s Secret Scar Approach

Dr. Petersen has performed dozens of transaxillary (AKA “secret scar”) breast enlargement surgeries in Salt Lake City. People even come from out of state for his surgical expertise and tried-and-true methods.  Many women desire this approach to implant placement because there are no scars left on the breast after the enlargement surgery. Dr. Petersen’s method also decreases the amount of recovery time after a breast enlargement surgery, so patients can get back on their feet faster.

The scars that do result from breast enlargement surgery are hidden in the natural creases of the underarm and fade very nicely. It’s like the having a “hidden” breast augmentation. Although many women who have his procedure opt for saline breast implants, Dr. Petersen does perform transaxillary breast augmentations for silicone breast implants in a smaller range of sizes.

When the implant is placed behind the muscle that is under the breast, there is a lower chance of contracture (contraction of the tissue capsule surrounding the implant), and mammography is more reliable. There is also less risk of visible or palpable breast implant edges. However, in some patients, the implant may have a more natural appearance when placed above the muscle but under the breast tissue. Dr. Petersen can help you decide which breast implant placement type and incision will work best for you during your consultation in our Salt Lake City office.

Determining the Right Breast Implant for You

A breast implant is composed of an outer silicone shell filled with saline (salt water) or silicone gel. The outer surface may be smooth or textured, and implants come in various sizes and projections to meet the individual woman’s needs. The shape of your enlarged breasts depends on the implant. Some breast implant profiles result in a more naturally sloping breast, while other breast implant profiles can create more upper breast fullness and a more rounded contour. Dr. Petersen will work with you to help you in our Salt Lake City office to achieve the look you desire.

The Secret Scar Breast Augmentation
Women often think of breast size in terms of bra cup size. For instance, if you are currently a size “A” you may wish to be a size “C”. There are many breast augmentation and enlargement factors that go into determining bra size including: breast volume, breast shape, chest/rib cage circumference, and overall body proportions. Additionally, implants don’t come in “bra sizes” but instead are measured in “cc’s of volume”. Realistic expectations of breast enlargement or augmentation are important and we can never guarantee a specific breast augmentation cup size. During your consultation in our Salt Lake City office, Dr. Petersen will utilize implant size techniques to help make the conversion to future desired breast size.

Often, a breast enlargement or breast augmentation is combined with a breast lift procedure. This is especially true when the enlargement is done to correct breast changes resulting from pregnancy or age. After pregnancy or during the aging process, breasts may sag and the nipples may point downward, resulting in a less youthful looking breast profile. A lift may be needed to remove excess breast skin or to move the nipples to their proper place on the breast.

Post-Surgical Breast Augmentation Care

You will need a responsible adult to drive you home from your Salt Lake City breast enlargement surgery and stay with you for 24 hours after the procedure.  You will experience some pain the first day or two that can be controlled with pain medication. Some tightness in the breast area is also normal as your body adjusts to the implants.

You can move about freely after surgery and should be up and walking several times a day starting on the day of surgery. Wear a bra at all times (except when showering) during the first 3 weeks and avoid heavy lifting for 6 weeks. Moderate exercise such as walking is allowed after the first week, but vigorous exercise such as jogging or aerobics may be resumed at 4-6 weeks. You will most likely be able to return to work within a few days, but individual times can vary.

During recovery from breast enlargement surgery, the breasts will be somewhat swollen. The swelling will cause the breast implants to sit high on the chest wall. Within a few weeks, the implants will “drop” and the actual shape and size of the breasts will be evident. It is not unusual for the implants to “drop” at different times. Dr. Petersen will use TouchMD to go over pictures of your anatomy with you and help you understand possible ways your body’s natural shape, size, and asymmetry will be affected by breast augmentation or enlargement surgery.

Possible Breast Augmentation Complications

Delayed wound healing may occur in persons with diabetes, history of radiation, autoimmune disease or smokers. If you currently smoke, you will need to stop smoking prior to breast enlargement or breast augmentation surgery. Other possible complications include capsular contracture, bleeding, infection, or irregularity of the skin. These are rare, but it is important to have a thorough medical evaluation before breast augmentation surgery to address these potential risks. You also need to know that even a small hole in an implant can cause the saline to leak out, resulting in a “flat” implant and necessitating surgical replacement. The possibility of a deflation or rupture of silicone implants can be diminished by taking proper precautions.
