What is a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a sought-after procedure that revitalizes the look of the eyelids. This surgical intervention involves the removal of excess skin, reduction of puffiness, and correction of sagging muscles, resulting in a more youthful and alert appearance. The surgery can be tailored to the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, based on individual requirements. Beyond aesthetic enhancements, blepharoplasty offers functional advantages such as improved vision and a boost in self-esteem. The recovery period is generally short, with long-lasting outcomes. At NuVista  Plastic Surgery, our experienced team is committed to providing personalized care and achieving natural-looking results. We invite you to schedule a consultation to determine if eyelid surgery is the right choice for you.

Why get a Blepharoplasty?

An eyelift, or blepharoplasty, is a popular procedure for those looking to rejuvenate their appearance. Ideal candidates for this surgery are generally in good health, with no significant eye conditions or allergies. While the procedure is often performed on individuals over the age of 35, younger patients may also be considered if they have specific concerns.

Candidates typically seek an eyelift to address:

  • Sagging upper eyelids
  • Wrinkles around the eyes
  • Puffiness and dark spots under the eyes
  • Excess skin in the lower eyelids

This procedure can refresh the face, as the eyes are often the first area to show signs of aging. Wrinkles and droopy eyelids can make a person appear tired or older than they are. At NuVista Plastic Surgery, we are experienced in tailoring the procedure to each individual’s needs, ensuring a safe and long-lasting result for our patients in Draper, UT, and the surrounding areas.

Surgery Types

Traditional Blepharoplasty

This procedure includes upper and lower eyelid surgery. An incision is made in the crease of the upper eyelid toward the temples. Once healed, it is not noticeable when the eye is open. On the lower eyelid, the incision is made along the lash line toward the temples, and is hidden by lashes once healed.

The Transconjunctival Approach

This is the latest technique for lid blepharoplasty. It involves an incision inside the lower eyelid. This eyelid surgery can remove fat, but not excess skin.

Laser Resurfacing

This laser blepharoplasty surgery is a non-surgical alternative that can postpone the need for a surgical eye lift. It results in significant tightening of the skin around the eyes, but will not affect the fat around the eyes and may accentuate it.

The Procedure

When we begin the eyelid surgery procedure, we first administer local anesthesia around the eyes. We also start an IV for sedation. During the procedure you will be awake but comfortable and relaxed. General anesthesia is rarely required.

We complete our eyelid surgeries on an outpatient basis at our surgical center. Because of this, it is important to arrange for care after the surgery. You will need someone to drive you home as well as care for you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Anesthesia

Local Anesthesia with Sedation or General Anesthesia

Procedure Time

1 to 3 Hours

Length of Stay

Outpatient; no overnight stay required

Discomfort

Mild to moderate pain, swelling, bruising, and tightness around the eyelids

Recovery

Several weeks to months; return to normal activities gradually
