Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate for a tummy tuck. Ideal candidates are men in good health who have realistic expectations about the procedure. For those who have a surplus of fat around their internal organs, unfortunately a tummy tuck will not help. We recommend diet and exercise, as well as considering the possibility of weight loss surgery.

Preparing for the Procedure

Before the procedure, Dr. Petersen will listen to your full medical history. He’ll then perform a thorough examination, evaluating your overall health. We’ll then take “before” photos to compare to you “after” picture, helping us see your progress. To prevent infection, we’ll prescribe you antibiotics. We also recommend avoiding taking drugs with aspirin and ibuprofen, as they will thin your blood and make it difficult to heal.

The Procedure

Abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck, is performed under general anesthesia. Surgery can last anywhere between two to five hours, depending on your overall health. We typically perform surgery in our certified operating suite, unless you have health conditions that require the procedure to be completed in the hospital. The procedure itself begins by making a U-shaped incision below one hip bone, across the pubic area and other the other hipbone. The second incision is made around the navel.

Dr. Petersen will then separate skin from the abdominal wall and lift it up to the hipbone. This will expose the loose tissue that covers the abdominal muscle. Dr. Petersen will tighten the loose and stretched out muscles with sutures and the excess skin and fat will be removed. Skin will be lowered over the abdomen and the naval is reconstructed. Incisions are sutured together and sometimes drains will be inserted to eliminate fluid buildup.

After the Procedure

Patients often feel minor discomfort after their tummy tuck surgery. This is easily manageable through pain medication. You might experience swelling for six to eight weeks—again, this is completely normal. We’ll give you specific instructions for showering and changing out your bandages. Some patients are also required to wear a support garment for up to six weeks. The speed of your recovery will depend on your physical condition before surgery.
