Hundreds of thousands of plastic surgery procedures are performed each year in the United States. Some are purely cosmetic, while others are performed to correct deformities and previous injuries. Data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons sheds light on the most common procedures.

The most popular plastic surgery is breast augmentation. Nearly 300,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2013, which represents a slight increase from the year before. Plastic surgeons perform a number of breast surgeries, such as breast balancing, breast lifts and even breast reduction, but breast augmentation with implants is the most popular.

After breast enlargement, nose reshaping is the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure, though it wasn’t performed as much in 2013 as it was in 2012. More than 220,000 people had their noses reshaped by a plastic surgeon last year.

Eyelid surgery was performed about as many times as rhinoplasty, and is a procedure that is growing in popularity. Liposuction remained a popular cosmetic procedure, with about 200,000 people receiving the procedure last year.

The facelift increased in popularity from 2012, according to the report, with more than 130,000 facelifts performed in 2013.

Plastic surgeons also do much reconstructive work, such as scar revision, hand surgery and laceration repair. Hundreds of thousands of people received reconstructive surgery in 2013.

The procedures described above are plastic surgical procedures. Many plastic surgeons also perform less invasive cosmetic procedures. Botox, for example, was a treatment given more than 6 million times last year. This speaks to its effectiveness at relaxing wrinkles and restoring a youthful appearance. Soft tissue fillers, such as Juvederm, and chemical peels were other procedures given to well over a million people.
