What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Women often assume the best aesthetic outcome is to remove fat – thinner is better, right? But when it comes to reshaping the buttock, the most important tool is the perfect placement of additional fat to fill divots, smooth outlines, and create the right shape.

Brazilian butt lifts are gluteal shaping procedures that emphasize the profile of the waist by removing fat from the waist, lower back and love handle areas with aggressive liposuction. We then strategically insert that fat into the hips and buttock area.

Brazilian butt lifts get their name from the land of sun-soaked beaches and bikini-clad bodies, but the technique was revolutionized by Dr. Constantino Mendieta, whose family was originally from Nicaragua.

Does It Leave Noticeable Scars?

Before and after Brazilian butt lift surgery in SLC

Unless you have had extreme weight loss, a butt lift does not involve any removal of skin at all. That means the liposuction scars that do occur are very small and easy to hide in the groin area. From the bedroom to the boardroom to the beach, your butt lift will be your secret!

Does It Leave Noticeable Scars?

Some doctors use butt implants or gluteal implants to increase the size of the buttock. However, our experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Dayne Petersen, recommends against them. They come with a whole host of complications and require months of recovery. Even then, they can move out of position and erode through the skin, causing chronic wounds. Butt augmentation is a faster, safer and longer-lasting option.

What is Thigh Lift Surgery?

Often, we perform thigh lift surgery as part of a Brazilian butt lift procedure. It includes liposuction and the removal of excess skin to leave smooth, pleasing contours. If we remove fat from your thigh area, we may be able to inject it into your upper buttock and hip area so you get the beautiful booty you want.

What is the Ideal Butt Shape?

Dr. Mendieta’s research identified four basic butt types: the A shape, the V shape, square, and round. As with all areas of the human body, there is often asymmetry between the two sides of the buttocks. One side may have a square shape while the other side has a V shape. The point of gluteal shaping isn’t to just add volume; it is to reshape the volume to create a more symmetrical, pretty backside.

Find your butt shape and learn how surgery can help.

About 40 percent of buttocks are square, and this is the shape we get complaints about most often. The most sought-after shape is the A, which occurs naturally in about 30 percent of the population. The round shape is the second most-requested shape. With a round shape, the outer contours of the buttocks form C shapes. The V shape is considered the least attractive and is the hardest to change. Having a V shape may require more than one procedure to get adequate aesthetic results.

Your goals may include adding volume, filling in dimples, and filling in contour deficits. Gluteal shaping takes into account factors such as crease length, muscle placement, sacral dimples, and lower crease angles. To achieve an A shape, Dr. Petersen starts with aggressive liposuction of the waist and lower back. Narrowing the waist above the gluteal plane can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of the buttock even before anything is done there. After waist reshaping, the fat we remove is strategically placed in the gluteal area.

What is Recovery Like?

Compressions Garments and Leg Pumps

Recovery from butt lift surgery is uncomfortable and takes several weeks, but the results are worth it! We will send you home with a specially designed compression garment that will keep compression on the areas of liposuction but will not put pressure on the fat grafting areas. You will need to wear it for 6 weeks to help with swelling and contour healing.

Depending on the length of your procedure, you may also be sent home with leg pumps to safeguard against developing blood clots. These should be worn for the first few days anytime you are not standing or walking, and may be necessary for up to a week. Although you will be sore, it is important that you get up and walk every hour or so.

No Sitting

Because pressure on the newly grafted fat will cause the fat to die, no true “sitting” is allowed for 8 weeks after the procedure. You will need to be particularly careful to avoid sitting immediately after the procedure. When you get home, you may lay on your stomach or your side. But besides standing and walking, these are the only acceptable positions for the first ten days. Depending on whether you need to correct deficiency in the hip areas, Dr. Petersen may not recommend laying on your side either. The only exception to the sitting rule would be using the toilet. Some patients find that a large inner tube will allow them to “sit” without putting pressure on their fat transfer sites, but this needs to be a large tube—like one you float down the Provo River in.

From Ten Days to Eight Weeks

After ten days, you may sit with pillows below your thighs so the buttocks are suspended in the air. Using this technique, you should be able to drive and can return to work. But no true sitting is allowed for 8 weeks. Putting pressure on the muscles and fat deposits in your buttocks could cause depressions. It could also cause transferred fat to die or reabsorb.

Liposuction Recovery

Because you will have also had liposuction, you will experience some drainage at the insertion sites. This drainage is most pronounced in the first 2 days after surgery. You will want to use disposable sheets to protect furniture and be prepared to mop up any leakage. Bandages can be placed over the insertion sites to help mop up leaks and will need to be changed frequently.

Bruising and Massage

You will experience some bruising following your butt lift procedure. This is normal and is more extensive for some patients than for others. Massaging the liposuction areas is important during the healing process to maintain smooth results. Since you will bruise, you can be gentle at first but more aggressive as healing continues. Foam rollers and rolling pins are good tools, especially when liposuction is done on the legs.

Is Butt Shaping Worth It?

Gluteal shaping requires extensive recovery, but the results are so worth the effort. By protecting the injected fat in those early days after surgery, you will maintain your results and go on to savor your success for years to come.
