Mommy Makeovers for Murray, Holladay, and Salt Lake City, Utah
A Mommy Makeover usually consists of two procedures to correct the two main areas of the mother’s body most ravaged by pregnancy. These areas are the breasts and the tummy. However, there are other procedures that we can perform for your mommy makeover. Below is a list of procedures we can include.
Breast augmentation is usually the first procedure patients look for in their mommy makeover. Often with pregnancy and nursing, a woman’s breasts will swell and change shape. Later in life, those breasts will look sagging and deflated. In the best-case scenario, a woman may only need a breast augmentation to restore that fullness. Unfortunately, it is common for breasts to not only be deflated, but the structure of the breasts has also collapsed, causing the nipple to point downward rather than forward. Dr. Dayne Peterson of NuVista Plastic Surgery has had patients refer to this as the “rocks in socks” syndrome. If this is the case, simply adding an implant may result in what has been called a “snoopy” appearance or a “double bubble” where fullness at the top of the breast still leaves breast tissue hanging below the implant. Appropriate correction will require a breast lift.
As for the tummy, the main problems are swelling, deflation and loss of structure. After pregnancy there may be excess skin in the tummy area that no amount of exercise can correct. Additionally, a high percentage of women have their abdominal muscles separate from one another during pregnancy to accommodate the growing child. During a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, Dr. Petersen will tighten the muscles in the abdomen and then remove excess tissue and contour the waist and hips. Some women elect to do liposuction at the same time as their abdominoplasty.
Brachioplasty or Arm Lift
A procedure gaining popularity for the mommy makeover is the arm lift. Here, excess skin is taken from the underside of the arms to eliminate that “bat wing” appearance. An incision is made from under the arm down to the elbow and the arm is re-contoured. The trade off is that the scar that fades over time, but is long and sometimes thick. Those looking for a smaller change may have liposuction of the arms done, but liposuction cannot remove excess skin.
Body Contouring after Weight Loss
After significant weight loss, it can be discouraging to still not like what you see in the mirror. Many times, a large amount of weight loss will leave behind unwanted skin that no amount of diet or exercise can correct. This skin gives the body a distorted appearance. It’s almost as if the individual is wearing a suit of clothing that is too big. More extensive than a tummy tuck is a belt lipectomy.
A lipectomy procedure is a tummy tuck that extends 360 degrees around the body. This is an extensive surgery, but one that can make a significant difference to the body’s appearance. Additionally, there are many other procedures to remove excess skin. An arm lift may be done to remove excess hanging skin around the arms after rapid weight loss. A thigh lift addresses skin on the upper legs in a way liposuction cannot. The face can also be affected, particularly the neck. A neck lift can be done to pull the skin tighter and eliminate sagging jowls. Body contouring after significant weight loss is a multistage process and can require patience for optimal results.
